After a brutal four years of conflict, the armistice treaty with Germany came into effect on the Western Front at precisely 11 a.m. on November 11, 1918 – the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month. The day was first recognized by Congress in 1926, and became an official holiday in 1938, when it was known as "Armistice Day" and was primarily meant to celebrate World War I veterans.
