This notion of sacrifice is deeply embedded in our Christian faith, as it brings to mind the ultimate sacrifice made by Jesus Christ for humanity. That being said, here’s a guide on how church leaders can talk about, acknowledge, and even celebrate Veterans Day in their communities. 1) Set up a meeting with your veterans. Make sure you include the women veterans. At this meeting work hard at listening. Listen for stories of estrangement from the church. Listen for how the church helps them in their life after military service and war. Listen for moral injury (google “moral injury” if you don’t know what it is). On Veterans Day, many churches recognize their Veterans – by applauding them during services, hanging signs and banners of appreciation, and posting on social media. But while recognition is an important part of honoring the Veteran community, it’s just the beginning. Honor veterans by looking beyond combat and recognizing the unsung virtues of loyalty, courage, faithfulness and commitment. 4. Integrate veterans into all aspects of church life. Churches often create a veteran’s ministry or outreach once a church begins to gather a number of veterans or active-duty personnel. Veterans Day Worship. Many churches like to incorporate a small Veteran's Day observance into worship the Sunday before the Nov. 11 holiday. This year, the eleventh itself is a Sunday, so a prayer or other recognition may be even more appropriate, keeping in mind that our worship is directed only at God and not human heroes. Resources for Worship. “ Suggestions for Observing Veterans’ Day (November 11) in Worship ” including a listing of hymns, scripture and a litany. From the United Methodist Church. Veterans’ Day Litany by Robb McCoy. Ministry Matters offers a reflection as well as liturgical resources. October 2022. Suggestions for Observing Veterans' Day (November 11) in Worship. Updated: October 2022. In most years and most times, Veterans' Day passes in our churches with little or no mention. Historically and traditionally, Veterans' Day has been more a civic than a sacred observance. It may be tempting to think we honor veterans by carving out a time to recognize them in the service once a year. What I suggest goes beyond a singular Sunday and encompasses the whole church for the whole year. 1. Create space for veterans to share their stories. Every human heart has a longing to know and be known. The following prayer and worship resources may be used and adapted as needed for Veterans Day observances or in weekly worship on the Sunday closest to November 11.”.
